Economic Inclusion and Human Rights

PROGRAM GOAL: A state in which all Californians can fully provide for themselves and their families and fully participate in society.

The Foundation’s priorities for new grantmaking will be:

  • Justice and Public Safety: Promoting changes in policies and practices that can reduce the state’s rates of incarceration and recidivism and increase formerly incarcerated people’s participation in the workforce and civic life.
  • Immigrants' Rights and Immigrant Integration: Supporting efforts to improve the wages and working conditions of immigrants, with a special focus on the needs of California farmworkers.
  • Accountable Development: Supporting efforts to make economic development in San Francisco, Oakland, and surrounding communities accountable to local needs for affordable housing and jobs that provide a living wage.

Multi-county research and planning project comparing incarceration rates by ethnicity, age, gender, and type of crime, assessing underlying causes of racial disparities, and recommending practical ways to reduce racial disparities and overall dependence on incarceration for addressing social problems.

Support for a special issue by The American Prospect on "Raising Earnings for African Americans: A National Challenge" and dissemination and outreach of the issue.
